Wizz Air, which has a subsidiary in Abu Dhabi and is part of the Indigo Partners portfolio, made the order for the additional A321neo Family aircraft

Wizz Air was Airbus’s biggest customer on Sunday as airlines placed a joint order for 255 A320neo family aircraft in a deal signed at the Dubai Airshow.

The low-cost airline, which has a subsidiary based in Abu Dhabi and is part of the Indigo Partners portfolio, accounts for 102 aircraft in the order. The remaining planes were ordered by the US’s Frontier Airlines (91 aircraft), Mexico’s Volaris (39) and Chile’s JetSMART (23).

The new aircraft will take Indigo Partners A320neo Family fleet to 1,145.

“This order reaffirms our portfolio airlines’ commitment to consistent growth through the next decade. The Airbus A321neo and the A321XLR have industry-leading efficiency, low unit costs and a substantially reduced carbon footprint relative to prior models.

“With these aircraft, Wizz, Frontier, Volaris and JetSMART will continue to offer low fares, stimulate the markets they serve and improve their industry-leading sustainability profile,” said Bill Franke, managing partner of Indigo Partners.

Christian Scherer, Airbus chief commercial officer and head of Airbus International, said: “We are happy to further expand our relationship with our great Indigo Partners’ airlines, Wizz, Frontier, Volaris and JetSMART who have acted fast and decisively over the last few months to position themselves for this landmark order as the effect of the pandemic recedes and the world wants more sustainable flying.”

Airbus said the aircraft will deliver 25 percent fuel and CO2 savings, as well as 50 percent noise reduction thanks to new generation engines.

The company said by end of October 2021 it had received 7,550 orders for A320neo Family aircraft.
